Marrying art and engineering presents a challenge, especially when working with nature. The predictability of the sun makes an engineer’s heart sing though, we know where it will rise, and we know where it will set, and it does always rise and set, as one of the most predictable things about an unpredictable natural world. This was also inspired by another predictable piece of the natural world - death.

The inspiration and design

This solar portal is designed to funnel the sun’s light on April 17th, at sunrise, high-noon, and sunset, the significance of choosing this day is that it is my Father’s death day. You’ll see in my mapping that the light funnels specifically into the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes, the lobes that respectively control emotional processing, sensory processing, and visual processing.
